This is the colourway to choose when the rug is meant to be the thing you notice. A deep tone under pale furniture does the same work as a dark coffee table on a light floor: it gives the eye somewhere to land and makes everything above it read as lighter by comparison. Under dark furniture it will do the opposite and close the room in, which is worth testing before committing to the largest size.

Depth of colour is where a viscose blend earns its place. A dark rug in a matte fibre can look like a hole in the floor, flat and without detail, whereas viscose catches light across the pile and keeps the surface alive. The trade-off is honest: the sheen that makes the colour work also shows footprints and vacuum lines more readily than a wool rug would, and they brush out rather than needing to be cleaned out.
