The detail behind the silhouette
Black under a plate does something worth understanding before choosing it. It maximises contrast, so pale food and white china read vividly against it, which is why restaurants use dark surfaces for plating. At home the same effect makes an ordinary meal look considered.
The trade-off is that black is less forgiving of crumbs and lint than a mid-tone, so it wants a shake-out between courses. Linen handles the frequent washing that implies, softening rather than degrading. At 30 x 45cm the proportions take a full dinner setting. It suits a formal table, but it works just as well making a weeknight meal feel deliberate, which is arguably the better use.
