The detail behind the silhouette
Smoking ash darkens the timber without hiding it, so the grain stays fully legible while the tone drops well below raw ash. That is the finish to choose when the room already has pale timber in it and another light piece would simply disappear.
On a darker top the inset detail reads more strongly, because the shadow line around the rim has a deeper surface to fall on. The pedestal base carries the same finish, so the table is a single tone from floor to top. At 80cm it suits a compact seating arrangement; in front of a long sofa the proportion goes wrong and something larger is the better answer.
