The Bincho Glass Bottle is a 1L glass water bottle supplied with a handcrafted stick of Kishu Binchotan charcoal from Japan. The charcoal softens tap water and frees it of up to 75% of added chlorine while enriching it with minerals such as potassium and magnesium. The bottle stands 26.2cm tall including the stopper and measures 8.9cm in diameter.

This is a slow, undramatic piece of kitchen equipment. You fill the bottle, leave it in the fridge overnight, and the water tastes different in the morning, softer and without the chlorine edge that comes off some town supplies.

What does the work is white charcoal, fired in Japan and riddled with microcavities that the water has to travel through. The stick stays active for one to three months of daily use, and when it finally gives up you can crush it into potting soil as fertiliser instead of binning it. The bottle is glass and dishwasher proof, so the only real routine is remembering to refill it.
