A woven back on a dining chair does something a solid one cannot: it lets you see through the chair, so a set of six around a table does not read as a wall. In a small dining room that is the difference between a room and a furniture showroom.

The caveat is the weave over time. Rattan is a natural fibre and it dries out in direct sun, which makes it brittle at the edges. A chair by a west-facing window will age faster than the same chair across the room.
